Grrrls up Front!!

today in my ‘Human Experiences in Diversity’ class, the professor asked the guys if women are oppressed and only one man raised his hand. She then asked if women are disadvantaged and the same guy raised his hand. Personally, I wanted to shake his hand for being a well-informed person. Then when she asked the girls, only two other women besides me raised their hands. And they had their hands half raised, looking over at me before showing their true opinion. With this, I realized I’m going to start a “RIOT GRRRL” club. Of course, I’ll have to tell my college that it’s really a “feminist club”. But in reality I’m going to be challenging the vibes from the teenage girls in Oly and DC back in the 90’s. These good vibes of making stuff, being aware of sexism and talking about ways to end it and most importantly; not being afraid of anything. Being loud, bossy and self-loving!! <3 This is what Riot Grrrl means to me. I know it seems like a cliché to some, but to me, it’s how I get through the day in our society that pushes girls down. I want to share this. Tell girls to make zines, art, and music. I want them to be unforgiving and stop questioning whether they should raise their hand or not, because THAT is their oppression. Their fear of speaking the truth to people who might not want to listen.
Love,
Adri.
